Mite Prevention in Drosophila Pots

For all arachnid enthusiasts, the health of your adorable phidippus is our number one priority!
Did you know that the key to happy, healthy phidippus could be as simple as sprinkling in a little magic...or rather, calcium?

Find out how to transform your feeding routine with our step-by-step guide, using powdered calcium to say goodbye to pesky mites. A simple gesture for dazzling results.

Treating fruit fly cultures for mites is crucial to maintaining the health of your phidippus when feeding. Using powdered calcium is an effective method for this. In France, the product " Calcidose " can be used, and in Belgium, calcium powder is available in pharmacies. Make sure the calcium you choose does not contain added magnesium or vitamin D.

Ingredients :

  • Calcium powder (no added magnesium or vitamin D)

Material :

  • High rim pot
  • Sieve
  • Bowl (to collect powder residue)
  • Funnel (optional)
  • New pot prepared for treated fruit flies

Steps :

  1. Preparation: Use a clean pot as a processing container.
  2. Dosage: Add 1 to 2 pods of calcium powder (500 mg per pod) to the pot.
  3. Method: Carefully transfer the fruit flies to be treated into the jar. Through careful rotation, ensure that the calcium coating is even on the insects, helping to loosen mites effectively.
  4. Separation: After a short time, pour the contents into a sieve over a bowl. Shake vigorously to remove mites.
  5. Transfer: Use a funnel or the edge of the sieve to transfer the fruit flies. For those using a square pot, its edge can easily act as a slide, simplifying the process.

This method allows you to effectively control mites, ensuring the health of your phidippus.
