Did you know ?
Our friends the Phidippus are true engineers when it comes to terrarium interior design. Just imagine: if Phidippus spiders had a CV, they would write "Expert in spider web construction and cocoon design" in full silk letters!
These little prodigies, with their abdomens equipped with silk glands, are the Mozarts of spider silk. Like an orchestra conductor, each gland plays its score: the pyriform glands for the "glue" used as attachment, the aciniforms for imprisoning prey (or surprise guests during impromptu dinners), and the ampullacea for the decorative spirals of the web. Basically, it's a bit like they have a built-in toolbox for any type of DIY!
When it comes to weaving, our Phidippus don't mess around. They start with the frame, like an artist preparing his canvas, then add radial threads, thus creating a true work of art. What if the canvas is damaged? Don't panic, they have already planned after-sales service with an express repair or moving option.
And for the final touch, making the cocoon is a bit like preparing a cozy cradle for the next generation of Phidippus. The female creates a multi-layered cocoon for her eggs, a bit like a 5-star maternity suite.
In summary, our Phidippus friends are not only adorable residents of our terrariums; they are true artists and engineers when it comes to building webs and cocoons.
So the next time you observe your Phidippus at work, remember to appreciate its talent and ingenuity.

Who knows, maybe they could teach DIY classes one of these days!
Next, next Sunday!
